'Flashpoint's' Spike Steps Away From The Tech Side Of Things And Leads His First Negociation
by: Lindsay Zier-Vogel
Cracking privacy codes, gaining access to buildings and playing around bomb detecting robots are all part of the job for Team One’s tech expert Spike Scarlatti. But in Episode 4, he steps into Parker’s role as a negotiator for the first time.
In the episode, someone hacks into Team One’s ultra-secure computer showing the team a video of a crime in progress. When Ed (Hugh Dillon) is forced to take a risky sniper shot, Spike tracks down the hacker and when he untangles the hacker’s motives, Spike finds a young man who’s put his life at risk to rescue the girl he loves.
“This year, Spike gets to do some negotiating, which is cool,” says actor Sergio Di Zio. “He usually doesn’t get the chance to bring anyone off the ledge, but it was really fun to shoot!
“It’s a beautiful thing, the negotiation,” Di Zio muses. “It’s a beautiful dance the writers write for actors – there are two people wanting completely different things who are talking to each other, trying to come to some sort of resolution.
“Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. It’s an actor’s dream.”
The experience of working with actor Kris Lemche (who played Episode 4’s hacker) was no exception, says Di Zio, and adds that after they shot Episode 4, he really understood why Enrico Colantoni, who does most of Team One’s negotiations, loved his role so much.
“Doing scenes like this is a very powerful thing for an actor to do and for someone of Enrico’s calibre, with his love for the craft, I can see why he would have enjoyed it so very much.”
